Nerd Hurdles #20 - Special Edition Directors Cut Bonus Features

June 3rd, 2009 · 5 Comments

Gag reels. Deleted scenes. Alternate takes. People love bonus features on DVDs even if they leave you wanting more. This is because only cast members find the bloopers funny and deleted scenes are usually deleted for a reason. This didn’t stop Jakob and Mandi from compiling a heap of their own mistakes and tangents to celebrate their 20th episode. As an extra bonus they play audio comments from listeners and Nerd Hurdles forum members. If this is your first visit, you might want to start with an earlier episode.

On Pete Townshend, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Townshend#Legal_matters (yeah, it’s wikipedia but I had read about this on other sources)

On filk…. oh come on Marius, don’t bash it like that. Parodies are just a small part, at least how I experienced it. You really described 5% of it. Jakob was more spot on but got around 40% at best. Bottom line, if you don’t like folk, you’d have a hard time finding anything you like. Having taken that hurdle, there is quite some good original stuff, original to the point that both music and story are not from other sources. That includes C.J. Cherryh and Mercedes Lackey because, while they write songs based on books, often they wrote the books themselves, so I count that as original. Bill Sutton has written some good stuff as well. If you cringe at the sight of folkfans in a bar, concert or festival, don’t go near filk. Admittingly, I wouldn’t take mundanes (mundane in the filk definition of the word) to it. My last bardic circle has been 17 years ago, though given the chance, I’d sit down again. Anyway, you have to be an ubernerd, a nerd among nerds, to like it. Not for normal, mainstream, garden variety nerds :-P

    A filk champion!

And thanks for the Pete update. Funny how the follow-up to those stories never get much press.

Filk indeed :D Well, I have to admit when I see photos of filksings I cringe at the thought that I have no qualms joining in, something along the lines of ‘OMFG I have turned into one of THEM!!’ [queue scary music]. As soon as a subculture within a subculture is making up its own vocabulary, run. I didn’t…….

On the Pete subject, I was raised on The Who like others of (pardon the unintentional pun) my generation had Stones or Beatles parents. So, while I usually don’t care about the private live of the musicians I love to listen to, I found myself looking this up every now and then after the initial reports. It didn’t add up. From what I understand, Pete’s interest in the matter comes from his childhood when he was left in the care of his grandmother. He thinks he has surpressed memories of childhood abuse by her and he was trying to trigger them through research which would eventually lead to a book on the subject of childhood abuse. He remarked that under the terms of his release he cannot dicuss the specfics of his case publicly. At the very least it seems to put Tommy in a different light.
